5 Summer 2025 Destinations to Explore in 10 Days or Less
In my group chat the other day, us moms were commiserating about the jigsaw puzzle of summer camp schedules. One of us utilizes an Excel spreadsheet to manage all the moving pieces. Her frustration was evident when she quipped, “maybe we should consider going on a family vacation where we’re all together during this empty week.” It was meant to be a joke, but we all paused and went, “Huh. Not a bad idea…”
I know I’m biased, but my vote is to take that trip together exploring somewhere new rather than putting more money into another week of summer camp and all the research, waitlists, and paperwork that go along with it.
If you’re already overwhelmed by the idea of summer planning, relax—I’ve got you covered with five destinations that are perfect for a 10-day (or less!) escape with children or without them. The best part? You won’t need a car to explore them. Whether you prefer land, river, or sea, these spots are easy to navigate, family-friendly, and packed with adventure.
1. Amsterdam & the Dutch Countryside
What to Expect: Bikes, canals, and stroopwafels! Spend a few days strolling (or cycling) through Amsterdam’s charming neighborhoods, exploring world-class museums, and picnicking in Vondelpark. Then, hop on a short train ride to see windmills, tulip fields, and the postcard-perfect villages of the Dutch countryside, sampling Edam and talking with the cheesemonger himself. Easy, breezy, authentic, and endlessly photogenic.
2. Norwegian Fjords Cruise
What to Expect: Jaw-dropping scenery without the stress of packing and unpacking. Depart from Bergen or Oslo and sail through narrow fjords flanked by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Shore excursions include quaint fishing villages, hiking trails, and maybe even a Viking museum or two. Embrace the midnight sun. Bonus: No car required, just your sense of awe.
3. Kyoto & Osaka, Japan
What to Expect: Temples, teahouses, and top-notch street food. Kyoto’s serene gardens and historic shrines are a feast for the senses, while Osaka offers a lively contrast with its bustling markets and neon-lit streets. The super-efficient rail system makes getting around a breeze. Plus, who doesn’t love a city where “eating until you drop” is a celebrated pastime?
4. Budapest & the Danube River
What to Expect: Thermal baths, grand architecture, and river cruising at its finest. Explore the Hungarian capital on foot, soaking up the history and indulging in local treats like chimney cake and goulash. Then, take a day cruise on the Danube to nearby towns like Szentendre. Pro tip: Pack a swimsuit—you’ll want to linger in those legendary baths.
5. Lisbon & Porto, Portugal
What to Expect: Hillside views, custard tarts, and a coastline you’ll never forget. Start in Lisbon with its iconic yellow trams and lively squares. Then, take a scenic train ride to Porto, where you can sip port wine by the Douro River and float under the city’s picturesque bridges. Both cities are super walkable and loaded with charm. My family and I are headed here this spring, and I can’t wait to share about our trip with you!
