Are you planning European travel in 2024? There’s been a lot of inaccurate information and unnecessary hype in the media about Europe’s new travel authorization requirement. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure smooth entry into Europe for 2024 and beyond.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS, launches in early 2024. It will require all US visitors to apply for travel authorization and receive approval prior to departure. It’s a quick online application, with approval via email. The application fee is €7 and required for all travelers, no matter their age.

In most cases, applicants are granted travel authorization within an hour, but if further checks are needed, approval could take up to 96 hours. Once granted, authorization is valid for 3 years, or until the traveler’s passport expires.

The goal of ETIAS is to tighten border security, as well as screen and track travelers entering and exiting EU countries. This is a reciprocal program. It is similar to the ESTA program administered by the US for travelers coming to America.

It’s an easy and affordable process, but forgetting to do it may result in denied entry and unnecessary stress while you’re traveling. It’s one more reason to use a trusted traveler advisor who can double-check requirements and fine details.
