She barely looked up.

One hand clutched a paper map. The other held a phone with walking directions. Every few steps she checked the time, glanced at her reservation confirmation, and hurried to the next landmark. She had made it to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, yet she seemed to spend the entire morning racing through it.

I remember wondering whether she would remember the city itself or simply the feeling of trying to keep up.

It is a pattern I see often. Somewhere along the way, we started believing the best vacation is the one where you see the most. More neighborhoods. More museums. More restaurants. More countries. More photos. It feels productive, but it rarely feels restorative.

In reality, an overpacked itinerary asks your brain to work overtime. You are navigating unfamiliar streets, learning transit systems, packing and unpacking suitcases, checking into hotels, and watching the clock so you do not miss the next reservation. Before long, the places you were so excited to visit begin to blend together.

The trips my clients talk about for years are rarely the ones with the longest list of attractions. They remember lingering over dinner while the sun set across a quiet piazza. They remember stumbling upon a neighborhood wine bar that never appeared on a “must see” list. They remember the conversation they had while wandering through a local market with nowhere else they needed to be.

That is the difference between checking boxes and creating memories.

When I design an itinerary, I think as much about the pace as I do the places. A well-crafted journey has rhythm. It balances iconic experiences with unscheduled moments because those unexpected discoveries often become the highlight of the trip.

The goal is not to see everything. The goal is to experience enough that you leave feeling connected to a destination instead of needing another vacation to recover from the first one.

If you are planning a trip and wondering how much is too much, let’s find your perfect pace together. Schedule time on my calendar, and we will design an itinerary that gives you the freedom to experience a destination instead of racing through it.
